Rose Gold

Rose gold has seen a sharp rise in popularity in recent times. It is created by alloying with copper to create its distinctive soft blushy hue. It is a delicate and pretty metal, perfect for those wanting something a little more unique. Rose gold's earthy undertones have a warming effect that is suitable for all skin tones. Romantic rose gold is an elegant choice for contemporary jewellery.

History

Rose gold has a long history of popularity amongst society's elite. In the 19th Century, jeweller to Russian aristocracy, Peter Carl Fabergé, incorporated the metal into his most ornate creations, most famously his popular Fabergé eggs. However, it wasn't until Cartier introduced their signature Trinity Band in the 1920’s that rose gold engagement and wedding bands gained widespread appeal.

Rose gold has enjoyed a phenomenal increase in popularity in recent years. Associated with style, elegance and affluence, the soft hue is often considered more modern and romantic than its white and yellow gold counterparts, making it a favourite choice for the contemporary bride.

Properties

Gold is one of the most malleable of all the metals, making it very easy to work. It can be beaten and stretched, even when cold. Extremely unreactive, rose gold won't tarnish, corrode or fade over time like many other metals. Though, it may begin to appear darker and redder after many years of wear due to its copper component naturally ageing.

Purity

Gold is affected by harsh chemicals such as chlorine and other cleaning products. We recommend you remove gold jewellery when using such chemicals, to reduce abrasion and loss of lustre. To clean gold jewellery use a solution of warm water and detergent free soap, and clean with a soft bristle brush. When not worn, store your gold jewellery in a soft cloth bag, in a sealed box.

Rose gold is created by alloying with copper and other metals to create its distinctive soft pink hue and to increase its hardness, giving it strength and durability. Gold purity is graded in Karats (K). A fractional measure, Karatage is expressed in 24ths making 24 Karat Gold 100% pure.

Gold Standards in UK:

22K = 91.7% Gold
18K = 75.0% Gold
14K = 58.3% Gold
9K = 37.5% Gold

Here at Facets we work exclusively with 18K rose gold (75% gold and 25% metal alloys), which provides a good balance of stability and purity, making it a good choice for everyday jewellery pieces. With this high purity, 18K rose gold is more hypoallergenic than lower karats, making it a good choice for sensitive skin.

Colour

The colour of gold is determined by two factors, the types of metals it is alloyed with and the percentage of each metal alloyed. The 18K rose gold we use in our workshop has a soft, rose appearance that is a beautiful alternative to the bright warmth of yellow gold and the cool tones of white gold. Rose gold has always been considered a flattering choice for all skin colours.
