Exchanging wedding rings is a time-honoured tradition that can be traced back more than 3000 years to the time of the Ancient Egyptians. Hieroglyphs depict couples presenting each other with rings made from braided hemp, leather and bone. The Egyptians considered the circle a symbol of eternity, and the ring served to signify never-ending and immortal love, with the open centre a door to the future. This symbolism still applies today.

Western traditions of wedding rings can be traced to Ancient Rome. Here grooms would present their brides with an iron ring, which was placed on the fourth finger of the left hand. Romans believed that this finger contained the ‘vena amoris’, Latin for the vein of love, which they thought to be a special vein directly connected to the heart.
